Screenplays about Personal Journeys of Self Discovery

When it comes to a film/script about self-discovery, does anyone have any recommendations, related to a film or script they watched/read that resonated, and if so, why? What about the writing made it stand out?

Specifically, I’m thinking in terms of personal, grounded, insightful stories about going on a journey, that eventually leads the protagonist to their true selves. Thanks!!

I feel like you've described every poignant "coming of age" story (including but not limited to feel-good fantasy coming-of-age stories, like Stardust) LOL Have you seen Netflix's Sex Education? Although if you are looking for a literal trip, some of my favorite RomComs have trips - Under the Tuscan Sun, The Last Holiday, and The Holiday come to mind. If you want a deeply morose drama, check out The Fountain.

There is an American movie called, "Mid 90s" which was a pretty good film. Loved it. I haven't been in that character situation but I have close enough lived a rough teenage so watching such, it's a good reference for a Self-discovery kind of movie.

Another one I saw was an Indian film called, "Meel Pathar". It's a story about a lorry driver going through a transformation after his wife's death. It's a fantastic story that outwardly looks simple, but subtextually the story of his inner journey and his realization of why his wife kills herself and his love for his wife and other subplots is fantastic. Many film critics in India and even the audience missed out on the core of it. I personally wrote to the director appreciating his film fully. I would have definitely sent that to Cannes or Oscar's. It's a well-made film, a damn good story, fantastic acting, and self-discovery. We can't outright point out what's going on as there is a lot underneath with subtle acting and visual symbolism in it. Must watch for any Art house film lovers.

I believe a way to true self is the base of any good meaningful story. Basic classic and so-dear-to-many hearts stories are told with clear vision of this way. One of my favorite films is Transcendence (2014, starring Johnny Depp and Rebecca Hall), where the whole dynamic story with lots of characters involved turns out to be exactly a long way of the lead (Evelyn Caster, played by Rebecca Hall) to true self. That's an amazing and I'd say, underestimated film.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona really does a good job of showing the hedonism and experimentation we can be sucked into when we're comfortable yet dissatisfied. It also shows how our 'true selves', or at least part of ourselves, can be something we chose to pack away and hide because it's ultimately destructive.

Think perhaps I wasn’t very good with my words. Very much appreciate all of the advice and recos. I was thinking in terms of films like Into the Wild, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Thelma/Louise, Joe Bell, Almost Famous… I know there is wayyyyy more than that. And I’m sure research would/will reveal more. But I’m sorta interested to hear what resonated for other writers. A story of this ilk that they were moved by, and why.
