A friend of mine, WL Wright reccomended that I join this forum so viola I did. It will take a few days to navigate and learn the ropes here however, looking forward to meeting others here.
Hello Maurice. A pleasure to meet you also. Several genres currently writing a non-fictional true story about two son's of culturally different families from 1918 thru 1946. A coming of age story and how these two son's lives along with their families are impacted due to WW2. One lives....
I love to write thought provoking powerful screenplays, in a few genres from western, suspense and historical content. I was an Art Director in film for 40 years, have seen a lot...
Welcome aboard Carl. As an Art Director in film you bring a lot to the table for us Director-Producer types. When it comes to screenwriting - I teach it (university level). There are a number of folk here on S32 that will gladly help you in any way they can. I'm one of 'em.
Thank you Chtistopher lol, Doug, Ally and Phillip for the greetings! It will take a few days for me to get moved in to the new "Digs", so to speak. Starting my career as a Set Designer, then given the invaition to join the Art Directior Guild was an extrodinary and wonderful event in timing and my life. I never looked back.
I"ve been fortunate to work with Academy Award winning Production Designers and Directors throughout my career. That being said, Directors and Writers must lead in and lead out of the scenes seamlessly in the diaolog and action. I very much so did the same visually for every scene whether it being shot on locations or built sets on stage.
Hey Maurice, An Art Director works with a Production Designer to create the complete visual concept for the Director for his movie. It encompasses the Design and construction of all the sets whether on stage or locations and scheduling with the First AD, Set Decoration, Props, Special Effects, Costume, Picture Cars and working closely with Stunt coordinators and his rigging team.
In addition working with Director, writer/writers and Cinematographer to facilitate their needs when changes to a script, lighting and the day of changes that no one anticipates. lol
It was wonderful looking back on what sometimes was utter chaos but we got it done. A rewarding time when the next day you see the "chaos" in dailies and it worked!
Hope that I have enlightened you on the Art Director role...
It was and I was very fortunate to be at the right place, Universal Studios at the right time in the mid 70's Rebecca. I retired from Art Direction 4 years ago . I pitched my script to two producer friends and a Studio Exec a couple of years ago. Keeping in touch with them and sending my close producer friend that is close with the Exec. the first act they are looking really forward to reading my Opus, lol.
Hey Doug, yes however, not nearly as well as top shelf storyboard artists that we hired and used for many years. I'm old school, I still draw architecturally by hand, paint and did all prelimenary set sketches to a camera angle with the aspect ratio that has been choosen. Mainly 1.85 :1 or the one I really love 2.35:1. I used my Apple computers for budgets, set lists ( my breakdown ) and assigned the set to set numbers, and research....

Can you storyboard off a script (with a little help from the Director)?
You are welcome Maurice. Those are the broad strokes,it does get far more detailed.
