Screenwriting : Hole in my Heart by Vanshdeep Singh

Hole in my Heart

Hey everyone. Hope you all are well during these tough times.

Quick Question. I'm in the middle of writing a screenplay which is more character-centric. Something like 8-Mile. Now here's the trouble. This is my first ever screenplay for a character-centric story. When I start reading my screenplay from the beginning, I feel that it's gonna work. But if I spend some days away from it, I start to ponder whether or not my story is going ok. Should I change that scene, or maybe that dialogue doesn't fit there and many more.

I feel that the script is lacking something but I'm not able to figure out what. Maybe this is because my first script was recently rejected from a competition. I don't know and that's the trouble, if I don't know what to fix, how will I ever be able to fix it.

If any of you have gone through the same/or similar phase please comment your suggestions.

Thank You :)

"Don't get it right, get it written," ~ James Thurber. Along with "The first draft of anything is shit." ~ Earnest Hemingway. Keep these thoughts in mind as you push through.

You may not understand the problem until it reveals itself later.

You're going to rewrite this. Many times.

Keep writing until you get to the end.

I would find someone you know that is the target audience of the film. If you think it is for 20 years old guys, find one.

Ask them to read it and ask them how they feel. Don’t worry about the writing stuff. You’ll figure that out. How is it playing with the intended audience.

I still maintain the best advice I was given was from a Sci-fi guy that read something of mine and said “the start is boring”.

Other people, good writers, had read it and said “I love it”.

A proxy for the audience found it boring. Who do you think I listened too?

Thanks everyone. These comments help me keep going. Much Appreciated :)

I've been there. Just write it. Let some people read it. Take in their thoughts. Put it a way for a bit (usually while the others are reading it). Reread, then rewrite if needed. It'll come to you what's missing. Also, as I look above, this has been said already ;)

Good luck to you Vanshdeep Singh

Rewrite rewrite rewrite. Look over your outline. Reread your scenes. See if you wrote something that could be explored further.
