Shooting Solo - Anyone Else Do This?

Two weeks ago it was long days on set with a small crew and talent. Now I'm picking up the rest solo -- Anyone else do this if you're acting in the film?

I play one of the characters in our film RECKONING, and wasn't able to grab my side of takes when the other actors were in town. So now I'm going back and shooting my stuff...but without talent and crew. Ugh.

This means I have to set up a tripod at the height of the other actor (who is no longer in town) and then frame myself up using yet another stand or tripod. Pull focus, hit record, trade places and go for it.

Time consuming? A bit.

But when you get it down, it's not so bad.

Frank Meijden

Wow, I admire your perseverance, though I think it is the only thing you can do if you want to get things done.

Kyler Boudreau

Thanks man! Yeah...just got done with another session. A gun fight without the other actor. We'll see how it all cuts together.

Karen "Kay" Ross

Hey, you're getting it done, right? Whatever it takes to finish the film! Keep at it!

Debbie Croysdale

@Kyler I admire your passion, Indie film requires ingenuity,. Also looking into the lens for POV shots are useful to add during edit (when nobody else is on set.)

Amazing Kacee

Kyler Boudreau I do this all the time as there are lots of flakes out there, there are always ways for the actual creator to get things done better and faster since it is your vision! Best of Luck and I appauld you!

Kyler Boudreau

Thank you Karen, Debbie and Kacee!

Shadow Dragu-Mihai

How is audio working on that?

Benjamin Watts

Love that determination and sometimes the coolest things can come out of it! It's an endurance test for sure. Break legs, not eggs

Kyler Boudreau

Hey Shadow Dragu-Mihai - Great question. On shots like this I'm not doing moving camera, so just a bunch of setups on sticks. This allows me to position the shot gun mic static. Then you do the normal roll sound, roll camera, slate and move into acting mode!

Colette "ByFilms" Byfield

I love your “no excuses” attitude! You are doing what needs to be done without blaming or complaining and that’s awesome.

Kiril Maksimoski

I did my first short as an actor/director...we had outsourcing production but I managed to assemble my crew + 'leased' editor and equipment...can't say I enjoyed it much, I'm kinda person don't wanna be all over the place...perfectly if I only act, write or direct....anyways, I don't do the latest anymore...

Kyler Boudreau

I get it @kiril, but I think you're very smart to do such. As Alex Lemay says, it's all about building your audience. The old days of Hollywood are long gone.
