July Filmmaker's Club: '25

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a great first week of July (can you believe it's that time already??)

I have 2 goals for July (well, 3, and one requires being Very Brave(tm)):

1) Engage on Stage32 more again. I have a habit of scrolling through posts and reading things, but not commenting as often as I should. That really needs to change. So I'm going to set aside time every Friday to have an hour dedicated to joining conversations (and watching a couple webinars I've purchased but haven't watched yet...)

2) Finish the draft of a pilot episode. I'm already about 15 pages in, and it's an hour-long episodic, so finishing by the end of July should be achievable!

3) Reaching out to a producer who's opeend the door to future conversations (I've recently finished working with her on a project) and sort out a way to ask about ways to get my own work past their current (seeming) plateaus. Whether it's working with her or someone else, if she has anyone in mind, etc. But I worry about coming off like I'm being pushy or trying to skirt around, I don't know, convention? That seems like an odd word to use... by coming to her with this. I genuinely enjoyed working with her and had a fantastic time, but I worry that if I ask her about future projects it's going to come off as, I don't know... greedy isn't the right word, but something along those likes (thus the semi-joking comment about this requiring me to be Very Brave(tm)...I tend to overthink and overworry). I don't want to let this connection fall away, but I also don't want it to sound like I only value it for a transactional sort of purpose. I think she's really cool!

That's enough rambling from me, at this point...

Best of luck, everyone, with your goals! You've got this <3

Sebastian Tudores

Great (and brave) goals Dawn Prato ! I have also just recently reengaged with Stage 32 at a level that is worthy of it's value - luckily Stage32 is always there for us when we're ready :)

RE your third goal - if the two of you enjoyed working together, and she's opened the door to future convos, I say 'walk through the door!' If it helps you take action, perhaps emphasize the very genuine feeling you've expressed that you loved working with her and that she's really cool over the feeling of a transactional engagement. You may even straight out tell her your concern. I've found that people always respond positively to someone as genuine as you - regardless of their circumstantial decisions. Good luck with all your goals!

Hi, Dawn Prato. Hope you had a great first week of July too. Congratulations on writing 15 pages in your script and finishing the project with the producer! I second what Sebastian said about goal 3. I'm rooting for you to reach your goals this month!

Dawn Prato

Thank you both! I know I'm probably WAY overthinking goal #3 (not a surprise at all, to those who know me), and I appreciate the advice :) I'm hoping to knock that goal off the list this week!

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Dawn Prato. "I know I'm probably WAY overthinking goal #3 (not a surprise at all, to those who know me)." I want to write an Action script or Sci-Fi Action script about that now.

Dawn Prato

Ha! The overthinking could definitely be a Refusal of the Call or the conflict/obstacle that prevents our hero(ine) from moving forward ;)

Eon C. Rambally

Congratulations Dawn Prato. I see you making an impact successfully in this July's Month Goals!

Parisa Shelton

You're almost there with your script. A little each day goes a long way! ✍️

Dawn Prato, I love seeing your goal! Reaching out to someone you’ve genuinely enjoyed working with isn’t pushy at all, it’s smart relationship building, and it’s clear from the way you speak about her that you truly value the connection beyond just what she might be able to do for your projects. That authenticity goes a long way.

Also, I’m cheering you on for setting time aside every Friday for Stage 32 engagement (you’re off to a great start!), and I can’t wait to hear how the pilot draft shapes up. We just dropped the Week 2 July Filmmakers Club blog and challenges here, and if you join in by Friday, you’ll be eligible to win a free Stage 32 Webinar- https://www.stage32.com/blog/july-filmmakers-club-week-2-strategies-for-...

Keep being brave and showing up, you’re doing amazing!

Libby Wright

What is your pilot about? I'd love to know more!

Dawn Prato

Hi Libby Wright! The pilot is about a woman who discovers her bloodline is responsible for keeping our world safe from a realm of myths and fantastical creatures - and she's the last of her family. She teams up with two brothers who were holding the line (so to speak) with her estranged grandmother, and needs to work through a complicated family history and an entirely new world full of rituals and creatures and fantasy to both protect her her friends and the world at large (no pressure!).

Libby Wright

Dawn Prato sounds like some amazing world building!!!

Jackie Letkowski

I would let the producer know how much you enjoyed working with her and present her with a pitch deck for your pilot. Then explain that this would a great way for you guys to collaborate once again :)

Dawn Prato

Thank you, Libby!

Jackie, thank you for the suggestion :) She's seen the pilot itself that I'd like to speak to her about (it landed me the writing gig in the first place), but you're right, I should absolutely see if she's up to taking a look at the pitch deck :)
