Yeah, nobody thinks of safety. People are so anxious to be movie makers that they don't get that this is a serious business. People get out of school, get a DSLR and they think that makes them a filmmaker. Even experienced filmmakers make errors, I have seen it over the years too many times. But, th...

Expand commentCarl - you may have a point. I never went to film school. I was trained on sets over the last 20 years and have, with rare exception, worked with people who consider safety to be issue number one on any set. In recent years, I've noticed the film school set arriving on location thinking they know how to do everything, when clearly, they don't. Hopefully, this tragedy will force people - from producers, directors and actors, to background performers, grips, P.A.'s and beyond to open their eyes - from the micro budget to the blockbuster level.

Expand commentWell, this was an indictment of most of the newbie, run and gun film-wanna-bes. But, point taken. I arrived for my first day on the job in the post department of one of the major Hollywood studios and I was given specific instructions never to mention I had been to film school. Everyone wants to get out of school and direct! LOL. You really think any studio is going to put their millions with a newbie? Heck, most of the directors I saw at any studio was 50+, now any everyone thinks they can direct. Ironic, the aside on this is that I see a lot of beautifully shot DSLR pieces that are crap - pretty pictures don't make great stories. Right now, it is like the days when Pagemaker (InDeisgn) came out, all of the sudden everyone in the world became a graphic artist. Now that the tools are so cheap everyone thinks they are a filmmaker. It hasn't democratized filmmaking, its just added more crap to the pile of crap that existed. - Film was democratized long ago, we just got Super8 film cameras or bought short ends of 16mm, borrowed a camera and made a film. If you have nuts, you could have made it long ago. I bought my first ArriS for about $1000 and film was friggin cheap. I used to borrow a Moviola from a buddy of mine that was not using his. I think it is sad it is not more difficult, because then you had to actually work to create something. Your script better be good or you don't shoot it.

Couple of things I love in your comment: "It"s just added more crap to the pile of crap that existed." It really has. And: "Your script better be good or you don't shoot it." Amen, sir. Amen.
