I thought about the book How to Write for Animation (by Jeffrey Scott) last night. I bought a copy way back. I think a few years after I became a screenwriter. It helped me write my first animated feature script Mice vs Rats. What books helped you write animation, design characters, etc.?
Admittedly a sneaky hack for me but I learned everything about writing animation from my brother, Alec, who wrote TOY STORY and other successful animated films. Alec brought all of that experience and knowledge here to Stage 32 for his class on how to write an animated film. Here's a link so you can check it out: https://www.stage32.com/education/products/how-to-write-your-animation-f...
Thanks for sharing the link, Sam Sokolow. Your brother wrote one of my favorite animation movies! Toy Story. I just looked up his IMDb page. He's co-writing Efraim Longstocking. The film sounds interesting!
The gold standard for all things animation is THE ILLUSION OF LIFE. It has a chapter on story. At the major studio level the story department has historically dictated the script, nowadays they reiterate it and the final script is updated to match the approved stroyboards.
I just read your bio, Robbie McCord. I started drawing young too, and I was a big Charlie Brown/Peanuts and Bugs Bunny fan growing up. And I thought Peanuts was called Charlie Brown as a kid. Haha
Maurice Vaughan Other kids wanted to grow up to be baseball players or firemen, I wanted to grow up and be Charles Schulz. Didn't get there, but I'm still alive so never say never. HA!
I have Animation Writing and Development from script development to pitch by Jean Ann Wright. I should check out this one you posted. I would love to write for animation.
Thanks for the book rec, Kevin Jackson. I haven't pitched a lot of animation scripts (maybe two or three), so the book will come in handy. Hope the How to Write for Animation book helps!

Thanks, Jack Binder. I mainly write live-action scripts, but I'm a SpongeBob, always soaking up things about other parts of the industry.
