Hi, everyone. I'm 70, have been writing novels since 2008, and started writing screenplays in 2024. Both screenplays I've completed so far have won awards. I guess I'll keep at it.
Hi, Karlyle Tomms. Congratulations on winning the awards! Winning awards for your first two screenplays is really impressive! Yeah, definitely keep at it.
My brand is diversity and resiliency. Both screenplays are LGBTQ, but I have two novels with cisgender heterosexual protagonists. My stories are character-driven and are about people overcoming complex life challenges. My first screenplay was an adaptation of my novel, Edge of Smoke, about a transgender girl growing up in St. Louis slums in the 1960s. The second is about a lesbian mother fighting Texas for custody of her deceased partner's child. How about yourself?
Karlyle Tomms nice to meet you. I just took a peek at your profile and your background is super interesting! I can only imagine how having worked in mental health gave you insight and depth into characters. Combined with your experience of being bullied as a gay man in the Ozarks. What would you say is the quality that is most important in writing and winning awards?
Alexandra Stevens. We have a lot in common when it comes to insight into personalities and character development. Winning awards was a surprise to me, especially as a first-time writer. I entered the first one with my agent's encouragement, and when the first draft, still somewhat of a sloppy screenplay, placed as a quarter-finalist, I thought, I may have something here. So, I entered more competitions and kept writing. What is the quality most important in writing? I don't know. I didn't think I could write screenplays because I'm so verbose, and that works well for a novelist, but I am learning to get a point across with far fewer words for a screenplay and to emphasize the visuals. Now, I'm really enjoying screenwriting.
