New To the Arena

I am excited to produce my first film this year and would like any information on what I can do to have a successful low-budget film.

Don't do anything until you have a solid script. "If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage."

I have made one independant film, a 2 hr documentary. The main thing I learned over its production (3500hrs) was organization and respecting the process. Every file stored on your hard drives (be sure to duplicate them) need to be labeled clearly and rated in terms of quality. The process of a Doc film is different than a narrative film. So if you're doing a narrative Shaun's advice is gold. I have heard that similar statement from guys like George Clooney.

Make sure locations are locked before shooting. The opposite happened on a feature I worked on, and it was a total mess. I don't know much about producing, but based on the sets I've worked on and the difference between who had their act together and who didn't, timing is everything. Take full advantage of pre-production. Best of luck.

Find some experienced people to help you and offer something that you are good at in return. Nothing beats great people who know their stuff.
