Producing : New to producing by Ed Hartman

New to producing

I have recently added post-production producing to my composing for films and TV. I have learned a bit about festivals, distribution and even the Oscars. I'm happy to share any information. I still score, too. I am working on a biopic and documentary related to the film that got me into the producer's chair, "As the Earth Turns" (1938 unreleased silent sci-fi film). The film has been in 122 festivals and won 134 awards/nominatons. I own the film-estate of the director of that film. Creating a team for pre-production and filming will be the next challenge. I would love to get to know other producers and share information about what I have learned. I also know quite a bit about music licensing (I teach it) and can answer questions about it. I wrote a blog about it, too. https://www.stage32.com/blog/Music-Licensing-vs-Music-Scoring Please feel free to contact me about any of the above (Zoom is great for me.) Good luck with your projects!

Richard: I'm on it. Thanks.

Fantastic, Ed.

Wow - 122 festivals and won 134 awards/nominatons. That's incredible! But moreso, for me, is how you both dominate in your field (composing) and are finding ways to learn and grow (producing). Kudos, sir! So inspiring!

Karen: Thanks very much. I'm not sure I dominate anything. I believe success is largely simply having the audacity to do things, outlast everyone, and make sure you publicize your successes (and failures! Hey, we're all human!)

I've always been a teacher. I'm constantly searching for process. I may not always do the process, but I will learn it. If there isn't one, I may create it. I will always wind up teaching it, though. Teaching has always been the best teacher.

Over time, if you do something enough, you become a resource and possibly an authority. The real secret is creating a center of activity around you. I've started organizations, businesses, concert series, been on boards, etc. 50% of an artist's time probably needs to be spent on organization of something. Resources are everywhere. Civic has created more resources than any thing I have ever seen. So many people are stepping up and sharing their experiences. Successful people are always givers and teachers.

In the end, the only failure in life is not trying. Yoda was right.

PS: Stage32 is a great example of creating a network. It's an amazing tool. Thank you so very much for the resource.

Ed, yeah 'outlast' everyone, succeed and fail, learn so much that you become the world's foremost authority and share that knowledge freely. If you don't die tryin', what's the point of dieing?
