Dries has a strong track record but I haven't read about a big spec script deal in a minute... this could be a sign that the spec script market has new life! https://deadline.com/2024/07/over-asking-spec-caroline-dries-paramount-b...

Bidding war. Two words screenwriters love to hear, Sam Sokolow.

Always nice to see a highly sought after spec script but you also have to take into account that Caroline has done some amazing writing for television already so it's not like she's a new face in the industry.

Nathan Smith there’s always a caveat haha

I disagree with that caveat. There wasn't a bidding war because she's a known writer. There was a bidding war because she wrote a script everyone thought was marketable with wide audience appeal.
Should also mention, very well documented here, there have been multiple spec script sales over the last few months alone - including one that happened during Cannes - that were from writers who had never sold anything before.
Take the cynicism out of the game. You'll be healthier for it and in a better position to win every day. More negativity = less progress.

I fully agree with RB on this. There is a long history of writers who sell a project with no prior credits nor "paid gigs". But what they did have was a lot of scripts in their portfolio and they had tenacity to network and meet a lot of contacts. Most of the time writers sell their first script, it is not their "first script" - meaning not the first one they have written. And they generally have had their other samples read around town before - even if they did not result in a sale, executives, producers, and agents are aware of them.

I totally agree Richard "RB" Botto and I love that the industry is now looking for us.

Like the Snow White and the Huntsman script that sold for 10 million Sam Sokolow and the film was atrocious, but his was a spc script as well.

Heard about another in the wind this weekend.

To be fair, I'm not saying that something like this can't happen with an unknown writer, it's something we all would love to have happen to us without a doubt! I think it's awesome that she was able to sell her script and be in such high demand, I just wanted to point out the fact that she is someone already pretty well within the industry which makes sales like this a bit more common. After all, look at how many filmmakers wear multiple hats these days, director/writer/actor/editor, etc. Not trying to diminish the awesomeness of this spec script sale, but just trying to manage my own expectations.
