Screenwriting : Writing Shorts by Beth Fox Heisinger

Writing Shorts

I've grown very interested in writing shorts. Many of my dear friends here on Stage 32 have had success either having them optioned or produced. I've read many of their fantastic shorts here on the site, but I realized I haven't "seen" very many. In my search, I stumbled across this site and I thought I would share it with all of you. It's called "Short of the Week." Take a look: https://www.shortoftheweek.com/

"Short of the Week." great thanks Beth :)

Pat Savage

Thanks CJ!

Beth Fox Heisinger

Thanks, CJ. I'll take a look. :)

Beth Fox Heisinger

You are very welcome, Pat! I really enjoyed the documentary short, "The Reinvention of Normal" about Dominic Wilcox, an inventor. Loved his "reverse bungee" idea! The "door book" at the very end was great too. What an imagination, this guy!

Stacy Gentile

Love that site Short of the Week. This post inspired me... time to write a short.

Beth Fox Heisinger

I know, right! It helps so much to "see" a short. I have a better pulse on features, so this truly inspires me. Plus, it's fun stuff to watch!

Trey Wickwire

I've been lucky enough to have some of my shorts make all the way to the viewing public, its a great feeling. I'm lucky enough to live in Louisiana at the moment and with all the "Hollywood South" action going on there are a lot of small studios busily making shorts. Still being a writer should make it possible to reach out to the smaller studios anywhere. Maybe check with your local universities and colleges to see if they have a film class. Granted they will want to work with writers who are students but sometimes they don't have one or are looking for something different and you can team up with them. Not much pay, I've done my shorts for IMDb credits but that's not a bad reward.

Anthony Cawood

Thanks Beth, I know what I'm watching later and may leave my feature alone today ;-)

Beth Fox Heisinger

Haha! That's great, Anthony! I do love your shorts!

Beth Fox Heisinger

...I do mean short scripts. Although, I'm sure you own some very fashionable summer wear. LOL!

Anthony Cawood

;-) I was wondering, wasn't sure our friendship was ready for the massive next step of uncovered legs ;-)

Beth Fox Heisinger

;-)

Beth Fox Heisinger

Yeah, yeah. You're all hilarious! I'm with you Kathryn being a wee thing myself! Drinking shorts? Never heard of them. Do you mean drinking 'shots', Sam? Pb, write in whatever you want to baby! ...Okay! Back on topic! xxoo

Beth Fox Heisinger

OOH, I see, Sam. Well, I'm not a very versatile drinker, it's usually wine for me. That went right over my American head. :)

Anthony Cawood

What, Sam's shorts went over your head? ;-)

Beth Fox Heisinger

Nice one, Anthony. Nope, his remark did! Haha! ...Okay, enough with the short jokes! Back on topic please! xxoo

Anthony Cawood

;-)

Boomer Murrhee

I'm enjoying them. Thanks for posting Beth.

Cherie Grant

I keep telling people to write short films before you tackle feature of TV. It is an important stepping stone and you are more likely to get a short made than anything else. Some people have been offered real work via their shorts.

Beth Fox Heisinger

Very true, Cherie. The more shorts I watch the more interested and excited I become to give 'em a try. :)

Beth Fox Heisinger

You're welcome, Boomer -- great moniker by the way! Did you watch FUGU & TAKO? It was fun! Great special effects. :)

Pat Savage

I'm enjoying them. Thanks for posting the link Beth. I have a nice glass of red here in my Spanish studio Saludos!

Beth Fox Heisinger

That's great Pat! You're welcome. Yup, I'm about to pour myself a glass of pinot noir. Cheers!

Danny Manus

Everyone see the article of the short that sold to WB in a bidding war? if you haven't seen it, you need to. and read the story behind it. But honestly - writing a short isn't going to do anything for you unless you are ALSO directing and/or producing it.

Stacy Gentile

Seeing how the conversation went straight to Beth's shorts ... I am grabbing a bottle of wine and Loading up Short of the Week videos ... and yes...I have the fireplace roaring too. Wine, fire and shorts. Sounds perfect.

Beth Fox Heisinger

Danny, the benefit is writing. It's practicing your craft. If a short of yours is optioned or produced you gain the benefit of that experience. Plus, any produced work may lead to bigger and better things. That is doing something for you. :)

Beth Fox Heisinger

Stacy, sounds great! Enjoy!

Anthony Cawood

I've done okay with my shorts, selling them, optioning them, a couple leading to bigger opportunities. But, more importantly, in fact most importantly... I REALLY love writing them.

Cherie Grant

It always irks me how little respect shorts get from people who haven't done any screenwriting courses. Shorts are your friends if you are really serious about writing not just selling your first big feature for mega bucks. rollseyes

Beth Fox Heisinger

Hey Pb, love that short! The little old lady -- hilarious!

Beth Fox Heisinger

Yes, Alle, it seems shorts tend to be made simply for the love of it; or for creating samples of one's work; or for competitions/festivals -- all for the hope that they may lead to something more. :) Whatever the reason, I'm enjoying watching this art form and being inspired by it.

Anthony Cawood

Just to add... to the above, seen as it's a Screenwriting forum and all... SimplyScripts has a regular feature where they review selected quality short scripts, you can check out the reviews and read the scripts for any that are of interest - http://www.simplyscripts.com/category/scripts-available-for-production/

Beth Fox Heisinger

...Oh, the woes of a cat's life. Great shorts, Pb! Thanks for sharing.
