Screenwriters Wanted: Audio Storytelling Collective

Hello screenwriters! I have an idea that I want to run past everyone in order to (a) see if it’s feasible and (b) inquire whether people would be interested.

Long story short, I’m a sound designer who recently just got involved in a fictional audio drama. It’s been a lot of fun, and I’m eager to do more. I would love to produce stuff on my own, but I’m not a screenwriter, voice actor, or composer! So I want to gather people who would be willing to collaborate, all the while giving everyone involved a really high-quality and unique product at the end to use in demo reels, portfolios, etc.

I would like to focus more on short stories of all genres; stuff that can easily be adapted to a 2-5ish minute audio piece. Maybe eventually I’d even post the finished products on YouTube as videos, in order to help gain people exposure. For those with stories, it could even be something you’ve already written, but would be curious to see adapted into something more “tangible.” This would all be low-pressure and on everyone’s own schedule. No major “deadlines” or tight production schedules. No stress in trying to get funding. All for fun, experimentation, and a different kind of chance to showcase your work!

Would anyone be interested in anything like this? I’ve posted this same thing in Lounges specific to each role too (so don’t think I’m just spamming everybody!).

David L Hauslein

I'd be interested to hear more about this.

Kyle O'Connor

Hey David! Just connected with you. We can discuss more.

Jerry Robbins

Hi Kyle, I have an audio drama company that is now in its 25th year. It's a lot of fun (and a lot of work to do it right) remote recording with actors is tricky - I hardly ever did it - as the mics vary so much it's difficult to make them match in the final edit - so I would record in studio. I actually dramatized one of my screenplays, thinking it would help sell the script; I never found a single producer who was interested in listening to it. I'm not saying it's like that everywhere - it was just my experience with that one production. It's fun though - give it a try!!

Kiril Maksimoski

Interesting offer, Kyle. Currently working on a short story I'm scouting market for...still it's length could be issue as I'm afraid it wont fit 2-5 mins.

Kyle O'Connor

Thanks for the feedback Jerry! Hopefully with The little to no barrier of entry for people, it’ll be less of a “risk.” I’m hoping too that it could help other roles as well. As long as we help SOMEONE!

Kyle O'Connor

Hey Kiril! Let’s connect so we can discuss further. I’d still be interested to see in what you have. I don’t think having a slightly longer piece would be too bad. 2-5 minutes was just the length I thought would be the most manageable for everyone on their own time. If anything, we could even just do a 2-5 min section of your story; the highlight of the piece that could accompany the script while you’re shopping it around maybe?

Kiril Maksimoski

Kyle O'Connor sounds good, however no tight deadlines still counts, right?

Kyle O'Connor

Of course Kiril! There won’t be any “release dates” or anything; it’s all a matter of how long everyone can/wants to work on it

Debbie Croysdale

@Kyle COOL idea and user friendly being no pressure! Audio is a great way forward, particularly regards covid and I been considering audio/blog/podcast recently. Audio is also one component of Transmedia and can showcase any idea in a different contrasting light, adding spin off storylines to original screenplays. Audio dramas grow narrative tapestry and recently there has been a boom in Alexa audio drama USA/UK. I’m not technical minded and gadgets are not my thing so I’m happy to “Merge” my writing or directing with someone who can physically execute an idea. Hope this takes off for you.

Doug Nelson

We have a video production called Radio ReDux that runs weekly (more or less) that is basically a visual live radio production show. Don't know if that's the sort of thing you have in mind.

Craig Prickett

I'd be happy to write something.Just drop me a line.

Kyle O'Connor

Thank you Debbie! Yes the recent boom in audio dramas is indeed exciting. I’ve found the stuff from QCODE (Blackout, Cartier, etc.) especially captivating; and if fact, it’s what has inspired the current audio drama production I’m working on. If you’re ever interested in working on something of yours, please let me know.

Kyle O'Connor

Hi Doug! Radio ReDux is more or less the idea. I don’t think we’ll ever add a visual component, unless someone really wanted to. I like the idea of keeping it completely auditory.

Kyle O'Connor

Thank you for the offer Craig! I’ll be sure to message you whenever I’m able to get more people on-board, and when we’re ready for a story.

Kyle O'Connor

Hi Barry! Just sent you a message.

Jon Shallit

Have a comedic short with surprise ending. Want it?

Kyle O'Connor

Hey Jon! Let's connect and we can discuss more.

Tasha Lewis

Welcome and congratulations! I'm interested.

Jon Shallit

added you waiting on acceptance to send you material

Scott Sawitz

I'd be down ... this could be a cool thing to throw a scene out from a script out there, get people interested and shit.

Kyle O'Connor

Thank you Tashsa! Let's connect.

And YES Scott, that is exactly the idea. It's a way for everyone involved to be able to showcase their material--albeit scripts, acting chops, scores, etc.--in a new light, and something they can help use to market themselves.

June M Rachelson-Ospa

Yes, I'd be interested, I'm a writer. Plays and musicals

Aaron Majewski

Sounds like an excellent idea :) I'd be interested in writing something...

Vasco Saraiva

Sounds cool!
