Screenwriting : What genre do you like the most? by Nadir Akhmerov

Nadir Akhmerov

What genre do you like the most?

Hello, my friends and colleagues. Do you like to experiment with movie genres? Some screenwriters write only in one genre. If you look at my profile, you will see that I write scripts of different genres. What genre do you prefer to write scripts in?

Debbie Croysdale

I tend to write horror but also spread the “dark element” to cross pollinate with a thriller or Noir, a sort of hybrid genre.

Andrew Lindauer

Anything that doesn't take itself super serious.

Daniel Stuelpnagel

Nadir Akhmerov expanding into different genres I think is an exciting challenge for me,

in my list of new concepts I have a couple of mashups, including a sci-fi / sports / financial arbitrage / comedy for example,

I love to create ample story material and then sometimes in completing a script I will pare it back because I realize it's too many subplots but to me that is a great problem to have,

I enjoy a robust feature with some level of complexity and intrigue, romance, suspense, location-based action, everything I can plausibly bring in albeit with a discerning eye to what is going to build a solid spine and through-line and clear protagonist or small ensemble with supporting character web.

I embrace research, so I feel that any genre or topic is potentially within reach.

We are ambitious, and I will continue to be as adventurous and outlandish as I think necessary,

with the welcome and valued sparks of inspiration from artists and colleagues like you,

thank you for sharing your lively curiosity and great creative literary and cinematic spirit!

Andrew Lindauer that is a good boundary for this creative pursuit I think!

Sometimes the story material that is understandably important to people becomes so didactic that it ends up joyless on screen,

your point is important and seems to get lost sometimes.

Of course my favorite movie is Team America: World Police and I know that type of material is not for everyone lol

Maurice Vaughan

I write various genres. I mainly write Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, and Thriller. I like to mix genres (Action/Comedy, etc.).

Angela Cristantello

As far as my acting self is concerned: comedy.

As far as what I prefer to write: I won't say 'dramedy' because Jason hates that word :)

Jacob Whitley

Crime. Just a fascination of mine.

Dawn Prato

I definitely lean into fantasy - not quite LOTR-level, but closer to shows like The Magicians, Lost Girl, etc. A "real" world with a bit of extra fun :)

Jim Boston

Nadir, I love to write comedies...but once in a while, I come up with a comedy-drama. In addition, I've posted an action-crime-comedy script.

Jason Mirch

Haha Angela - I don't hate the word "dramedy" - I hate that it is usually incorrectly defined. We did a whole webcast in the Writers' Room titled "What the *&^% is a Dramedy?" and it was a lot of fun! If anyone wants to watch it on demand email me at j.mirch@stage32.com and I will hook you up.

Andrea Zastrow

Oooh, drama with the word "dramedy." That does sound fun! I like to write drama and comedy. "Dramedy" can be confusing. I recently asked a fellow member who has read my comedy if he thinks it's really a dramedy. Wait for it... He said it's a comedy. Whew, that's how I've been pitching it. :)

K. Legason

I mix Romance with different genres. It's my thing right now.
