Introduce Yourself : Cannes is a Place to Make Connections by Eugene Mandelcorn

Cannes is a Place to Make Connections

I am in Cannes from May 14 to May 29. Have met some really talented people here. Yesterday, I met and had a discussion with Chloé Zhao. Some of the people I have met in the last few days may not yet be names in the industry but will soon have that status.

If you have something important to say, something of value to offer others in the industry, you can't help meeting the people that you want to work with in the future.

Eugene Mandelcorn nice one, Eugene. It’s great to hear of your Cannes adventure. Are you trying to connect with financiers, sales agents or distribution companies, whilst you’re there? Or is this a scouting trip? Any tips about orientation and finding the best way to experience it, would be gratefully received by the community.

Thank you for your comments. For me, it is important to be here for the entire Festival & Market. The first few days I concentrate on the distributors from around the world. I have 2 films in distribution right now and plan to shoot 2 more this year, so I want to meet those that can get our films in Theaters and on DVD in a number of languages and on other international distribution sites like major Airlines. The Buyers usually come early and leave early, so you must try to contact them in the first few days. The Sales and Marketing Companies usually stay a little longer, but once the buyers have gone home their sales outlets are gone and they usually leave early themselves and the market ends before the festival ends. So, near the end of the Market, I try to find out which of the Sales Agents has made the most lucrative deals and what types of films they are looking for, for future sales. Once the Market has wound down the festival starts to ramp up. People are talking about the competition and repeat screenings of some of the films are drawing some of those who were part of the market that stay to watch the films. Now I can make connections with filmmakers, actors, writers and producers as well. Possible additions to our International Studio Without Borders or Walls or people with funding sources that could supplement those we already have access to. So, in a nutshell, that is what I do. I also only speak English, so I make sure I have colleagues traveling with me who speak other languages, and especially French.

I just came back from the Annual Stage 32 Cannes Networking Party, and it was the best yet. I made more than 2 dozen connections in less than 2 hours, and I am sure I will be working with many of those talented individuals in the near future. Thank you Stage 32 for putting on a great networking event.

Way to go, Eugene!
