Best time to write and create: 4am-6am when the kiddos are asleep. Best time to edit: 6pm-8pm after a couple of glasses of wine. I wont lie - coffee in the morning. Red wine at night.
Arthur Charpentier interesting — I’ve never heard someone put it that way before. You’d think it would be a distraction… Don’t get me wrong, I can’t write in plain silence either, but what I have playing has to be reeeally minimal. For example, I’ve had this on in the background for a week straight while writing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEyJXNfx7Yg
Lauren Hackney I literally thought to myself while reading your comment, “yup, after a couple glasses of wine”… then kept reading and saw you wrote exactly that! It really does get the creative juices flowing ( :
I think there was a mistake in the translation to English. I listen to music first and then write the lyrics. But in the past, I could write while listening to quite loud music, and I didn't care about the quality of the lyrics; I only focused on the number of words.
Great question. However, I tend to write from waking until sleeping. It has to do with creative synesthesia and ADHD with hyperfocus. I am only not being creative when eating or sleeping.
Chase Cysco, what kind of projects are you working on if I may ask? I primarily write songs, more than 250 so far, but I also have written out four TV series, four films, and a stage musical. I have done all this starting in April of this year.
Arthur Charpentier, I have a long history with music. I was twice a college radio DJ, once a nightclub DJ, helped set up concerts at a music venue in California. I had around 7,000 albums in my personal music collection.
When I write songs, I do not know what I think as I write them. Actually, I do not really think at all. The words just come spilling out. I can draw inspiration from 75 year old comic books, 100 year old patent applications, a random phrase seen or heard on YouTube or elsewhere. I wrote one song High Jinka immediately after standing next to the sink. I thought sink and then I thought sinka and then in less than five minutes I had written High Jinka. I then turned it into a fun series of Jinka songs, including High Seas Jinka. A couple of days ago, I wrote perhaps my very best song titled No Lock to Fit. A phrase "a key with no lock to fit" had me writing a truly cinematic tune in less than five minutes.
I prefer a funnel.... no I only joke... I have a glass that is from my Grandmother's china cabinet. I fill her up and see what happens..... What's your preferred drop @wynmanbrent?
Lauren Hackney, I had to go to Beijing to get a China cabinet. As for filling up grandma, she managed to do that herself when she was alive. She was not a teetotaler. As for my favorite poison, I will say that I am good friends wtih Baileys. I visited him in Ireland and brought him over to Germany.
Definitely sunrise. Or should I say when I wake up and there's nobody else to bother me up yet. But the funny thing is, sometimes I just get into some sort of creative streak and then I can write whenever. This happened to me just two weeks ago on vacation. I had an idea, started developing, loved where it was going, started outlining, then started writing scenes and it was awesome.
I've also found that if I put earbuds in and write to smooth instrumental blues it works the same as waking up before anyone else.
Vital Butinar, I am all for the blues. I got to help set up concerts for two of my heroes, John Lee Hooker and one for Bobby Blue Bland. I was in heaven each time.I also got to see BB King in concert. Simply amazing.
Great question Chase Cysco - I have two windows. One is early morning from 6am-9 and the other from 2pm on. I know that sounds weird but there's something from 9am to 2 that just says, "No, no" so I focus on other stuff.
It wasn't really a lifestyle choice Leonardo Ramirez 2 - I just seem to have fallen into a biphasic sleep pattern, and rather than fight it, I use those middle hours for quiet creative tasks like writing or designing.
Ideas come at me whenever I'm not asleep lol but as for writing I'm finding it harder to write at night like I used to when I was younger; as long as the sun is out, I have the most focus and energy, so my pages tend to reflect that.
Lauren Hackney Lately I’ve been really into IPAs....there’s this new spot by my apartment with a ton of new brands popping up. What about you ? Red or white?
Vital Butinar Oh yeah, as soon as you said “vacation” I instantly thought motivation aha (: by some water or somewhere nice. That’ll do the job every time lol .
OMG YES! I literally only write between 12am-5am. I’m a night owl and work nights so my whole sleep schedule is flipped. I can't think straight at any other time sense I'm not fully awake and focused unless it's ts after midnight.
I'm very similar, Chase Cysco. My writing brain comes alive at around 9:00 pm, which is very frustrating because I try to force myself to go to bed at midnight so that I keep a somewhat healthy sleep schedule. Someimes when I'm on a roll, I can't stop. Next thing I know, it's 2 or 3 in the morning, and I'm forcing myself to stop the flow. Of course, this means it takes me forever to fall asleep, and I just lie in the dark, wishing I were still writing and trying to commit thoughts to memory.
5am-11am. The house is quiet. The first coffee is delicious. My brain is rested. All systems are "go". Oddly enough, when I was a creative executive at a major ad agency in the 80s, a consulting group (remember them?) did profiles on all the company executives including what times we were at our most productive. For me it was 10am to 2pm. Made sense.

I am inspired by music. After listening to music, it is easier for me to write lyrics, and it doesn't matter what time of day it happens.
