Introduce Yourself : Re-introducing Myself by Patrik Gyltefors

Re-introducing Myself

Hi, I am Patrik, a VFX artist residing in Kamakura, Japan, specializing in Nuke and Houdini. Since my last introduction, I started a DaVinci Resolve course (currently 25 episodes) and a Nuke course (currently 21 episodes) on YouTube, and also plan to start a Houdini course soon. Outside of work, I spend most my time swimming in the Pacific Ocean, or hitting the sandbag.

Maurice Vaughan

Hi, Patrik Gyltefors. Great to see you at Introduce Yourself Weekend. Do you like DaVinci Resolve or Nuke more?

Ashley Renée Smith

Hi Patrik Gyltefors, great to see you reintroducing yourself! Your mix of high-end VFX work with Nuke and Houdini, plus the fact that you’re actively teaching through your DaVinci Resolve and Nuke YouTube courses, is seriously impressive. That kind of knowledge-sharing is such a gift to the creative community. I also always love seeing your posts in the Post-Production Lounge and really appreciate every time you take the time to share insights and advice there, it makes a real difference for other members.

Patrik Gyltefors

Hi Maurice Vaughan, personally, I really love Nuke and Houdini, and use these for almost everything, including non-VFX things, as they are node-based, and can be used almost like lego-blocks to build anything you have in mind. Though DaVinci Resolve is really fun to use, and can do everything from editing to color grading for free (or at a reasonable cost for the Studio version). My current approach is to combine the two, bringing things over to Nuke if I need to do more complicated compositing.

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks, Patrik Gyltefors. I might try Nuke, Houdini, or DaVinci Resolve. I want to learn how to make VFX for mood reels I'll use to help pitch my scripts. Maybe other things too.

Patrik Gyltefors

Maurice Vaughan, I would recommend starting with DaVinci Resolve and color grading, as it is the last step in the pipeline, and really defines what the viewer will experience.

Maurice Vaughan

Ok, thanks, Patrik Gyltefors. I'll try DaVinci Resolve.

Patrik Gyltefors

Maurice Vaughan, btw, what is your main genre? If I recall correctly, horror? What kind of effects are you looking to do?

Maurice Vaughan

Horror and Action, Patrik Gyltefors. I'm not sure what kind of effects right now.

Patrik Gyltefors

Maurice Vaughan, with a mood reel, do you mean something like this trailer? https://vimeo.com/156050986

Richard "RB" Botto

Great to hear from you, Patrik Gyltefors. And a fantastic "hidden" message in this post. Take care of the body and you take care of the mind.

Juliana Philippi

Patrik Gyltefors Happy IYW week, and nice to meet you via your re-introduction : ) Wow, swimming in the Pacific ocean, that's so wonderful, all of that beauty, that nature, that peace really opens up creativity, and it looks like you're on a roll with your projects. Best of luck on them.

Patrik Gyltefors

Thanks Richard "RB" Botto & Juliana Philippi, yes good exercise really clears up the mind for creativity.

Richard "RB" Botto

Great example to set, Patrik Gyltefors. Most welcome. Thank you for sharing.

Amanda Toney

thrilled to have you here, Patrick. Of the projects that you work on what genres do you tend to enjoy the most?

Patrik Gyltefors

Amanda Toney, thank you, I mainly enjoy medieval epic fantasy.

Maurice Vaughan

That's incredible, Patrik Gyltefors! Thanks for sharing it. And like this: https://x.com/royleeroy25/status/1569044296367767552

Patrik Gyltefors

Hi Marie Hatten, nice to meet you.

Patrik Gyltefors

Maurice Vaughan, for something like that, color and lighting definitely is important for the mood, but also sound. You could probably mix in some practical effects, integrating them using VFX (DaVinci Resolve Fusion or Nuke).

Maurice Vaughan

Ok, thank you, Patrik Gyltefors.

Patrik Gyltefors

Maurice Vaughan, I'd be happy to provide feedback and ideas if you post your WIP:s in the forums or direct message. The important thing is to get started, blocking out something simple that you can continue improving.

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks, Patrik Gyltefors. I appreciate it. I just bookmarked your post so I can find it easily. And thanks for the tips.
