Do you produce features?
Sure do, James.
Hey Heather, I was told by the folks at Stage32 that you were a great person to talk to about a Stage32 Richmond/Virginia meet up.
Hi Eric, haven't yet been, but hope to at some point. You might also try connecting with the Virginia Production Alliance list serve as there are some cool events that take place on that front as well. Cheers, hw
You're with RIFF, aren't you?
Yes, James sure am. I produce RIFF, and also co-owner of Creative World Awards. Great to connect with you.
Hi Heather. I am looking for a director for a short I have written. I have posted it in Jobs if you'd like to take a look. If you would like to take a look at the script, please let me know.

I have been developing many concepts for feature and short films. It never occurred to me that the festival circuits could also be a great place for writers to strut their stuff. I am excited and more motivated than ever to start writing my features now with an outlet for my work within reach. I am currently wrapping up my first novel this month and I was wondering if you had any insight on publishing? Are there divisions for novels at festivals? Thanks again! Perry Stoutt II

Expand commentHi Perry, sounds like you're coming out of the gate swinging -- gr8 to hear! As far as your novel goes, I'm not aware of any fests that have a category for that. My recommendation would be, once you have the novel written to consider going ahead & adapting it into a screenplay. Most fests and screenwriting comps avoid taking adaptations, but if the novel's author and screenwriter are one in the same, they'll often allow it in that case as obviously you own both outright. Luv your passion -- keep up the great work!
That sounds great! That is something I can definitely work towards. Thanks again and thanks for getting back to me so promptly. If all goes well you should see an entry by me in the RIFF this year!
Heather, this is just what I needed to get me going on my little project. Thanks!
Fabulous, Andrew! And very best wishes as you get things rolling.

Are the producers and agents out there really doing the new body of work waiting in the wings justice, as they clamor to re-adapt all the movies that have already been adapted again and again. I would like to know where the ground breakers are, where the "take a chance on me" people are... is there anyone left that dares break new ground? From "starting to get a little jaded" :) Jay

Expand commentHi Jay, yes -- it's called the wonderful world of indie filmmaking. And they're likely the one audience that helps keep the main stream in check. Many indie producers & filmmakers are out there breaking new ground every day. So I would venture more into that world & begin building a strong network there. Thankfully, platforms like Stage 32 are helping remove barriers & making it much easier today to connect with those great folks.
Good blog, Heather. I often attend festivals just because of my love for film - it's great to see different level of artists on screen and talk to like minded people after films are done screening. If it weren't for festivals I wouldn't find the hidden gem stories that my friends and I love so much.
Thanks, Andrea. It's film patrons like you that helps artists everywhere continue to share their voice.
So splendid, Heather! Thanks so very much for sharing your impeccable insight. You are making the world a better place through your effort - Glen
Many thanks for writing in, Glen; very glad you enjoyed it. And Godspeed to you & your creative endeavors.
You are so EVER quite welcome, Heather! And thanks so very much also to you!
Very encouraging Heather. Thanks. I'm sure many of us feel they have no chance. Especially if they're new writers. I would like your thoughts on submitting a script for a short several times to different festivals that hasn't won any awards at those already entered?

Expand commentThank you, Ronald. And you raise what I think is a very relevant question re: short scripts. There tends to be ample ‘how to’ content available to writers regarding feature writing, but the short script format is one of the more overlooked areas when it comes to writers having useful tips at their disposal. While I can’t say why the specific script you’ve mentioned hasn’t fared as well as you’d like yet, I will say that I think shorts are particularly difficult to nail due to the stringent limitations a writer has to work within. Mastering the more critical elements of shorts can be a real art form. In my experience, the most successful ones present what is often a universal problem, but they take us on a journey of exploration through the lens of an unexpected, cutting edge perspective (POV) that ultimately spins a subject in a new, unanticipated way. And if they’re able to convey substance and meaning for a variety of audiences while doing that, it’s often a bonus. As the short writer takes on these risks, there should be a heightened element of suspense and surprise traceable from its beginning to end, ultimately providing something unique for the audience to contemplate. This can be tough to accomplish with so few pages available, but a writer that perfects this art will likely stand out from the rest. The goal for shorts is to have a razor sharp focus in these critical areas, so I would take a look at each of them and see where your script currently lands.

An inclusive and spirited festival designed to honor true film artists; RIFF welcomes produced films and screenplays of all genres and niches (features & shorts). With the aim of promoting both established filmmakers and discovering up-and-coming talent, the Richmond International Film Festival works to promote its participating filmmakers and writers through various media outlets and production partners.
