Success Stories: MAR'31 In a pitch where nothing seemed to go right...

In a pitch where nothing seemed to go right...

The script felt like it was in great shape. The Production Company seemed to be the perfect fit. And that's where the good news stopped. Five minutes past my pitch window, I received a call from an unknown number. On the other end was the broken-up voice of the Producer explaining how the Skype option had gone out the window and we were going to proceed like this: with no visual way of telling how my pitch was landing and no confirmation whether or not she was receiving the same broken-up dialogue I was hearing. But I launched into it anyway. And I got personal. In what might have been a borderline therapy session, I aired the personal flaws at the core of this script, and, again -- with no way of telling how it was landing -- it might've gotten weird. I was almost positive that it had gotten weird. To help me out, the Exec started hitting me with some questions that I was having a helluva time fielding. At this point, it had most definitely gotten weird. And STILL with no clue as to how I was being received, I came out and asked if she wanted to see the script. Yup, nothing was going right... Until I got the script rec today! Moral of the story: stick to your guns, know your story, be honest and open, and, ultimately, if it gets a little weird, that might just be the human consequence of discussing a touchy subject. It might have been, for all I know, what made her want to read the script in the first place. Now, will they want to go forward with this script? Who knows. Perhaps if everything keeps going wrong, they will :P

Phil Parker

Well done, David. You were the hero in your own little hero's journey there! Best of luck!

Yvonne Coughlan

Brilliant! You're a great story teller, that's why she wants to read the script.

Brian Walsh

Nice! Thanks for that story, David. It's encouraging to us that are starting out.

Sylvia Marie Llewellyn

Weirdly funny post. :-)

Phillip E. Hardy, Prolifique

Cool tale of seeming disaster turned to triumph. I see it as a short script.

Shari D. Frost

Wow! Super inspirational post! Guess you just never know...

Helena Ellison

Weird is good in my world.

Pete Stone

Thanks for sharing that experience and tip, great job persevering through the obstacles!

Emma J Steele

Great story, congratulations, David!

Mike Stivala

David - this is an awesome story! When I look back on the pitches I've done (good and horrible) the best ones were always the ones when I just said "F**k it" and just let it all go and leave everything in the room. More proof that your gut is alwaysl right. Congrats!

Mike Romoth

Thanks for the "warts-and-all" story. We all get nervous and weird, and it's nice to know that good things can still happen.

Ann Petrou

This is a wonderful story, probably not so great for you at the time, but a weird wonderful story with great advice to others at the end of it. You will probably be sharing your experience at a pitch workshop in which you will be the guest speaker "Pitching - What can go Wrong?" All the best with your project David, I hope it all moves forward
