Anything goes in chat...or that's what some think...

I am not a person that is generally mean-spirited and I hope it doesn't come off that way. However, I do have a problem with being chatted up by people only interested in me for my looks, (what few i may have haha) or the fact that i am a woman. Being kind and learning about each others respective backgrounds is a normal, healthy part of any kind of communication. Asking for pictures or chatting to someone solely for perverse reasons is not appropriate. Not to me, in fact, it's degrading and at certain levels would be considered sexual harassment. Luckily, I haven't experienced that yet, and hope I never do. This is supposed to be a safe, professional site for like-minded individuals interested in all aspects of film. It's not an online dating service, last time I checked. Please, have some integrity, it behooves you to represent yourselves in a business-like, non-exploitative way. Don't give your profession a bad name because of your behavior. There are already too many people filling those shoes in the film industry. "Be the change..." In the end, you'll be happier if you do. Promise.

U rather be ugly and get no attention, or beautiful and have no limits? We can't control the thoughts and actions of other people. So I, just live.

Alysia Jene' Culley

Being attractive to someone (or not) is a subjective experience. Plenty of people get more attention based on physical appearance alone, but I am not interested in that. I do not put limits on myself, or on others based on an outward physical quality. I prefer to look inwardly... that's where true beauty lies (not to mention intelligence).

Christopher Hart

You make a great point- it's all subjective. Even when you're looking inward. My take is this, Totality. It sucks to pick apart someone, and only want the appealing aspects only, but, I think it's important to do so. Here's why; as artist, we need to use the things that piss people off to make them appreciate what they don't see. We need death to love life, we need ugly to gawk at beauty, we need our hearts broken to learn to love harder and wiser. People who get that change the world, those who don't, live in resentment of those who don't understand what you're trying to say.

I have a friend that I steal a quote from all the time" Until we are all like God and can see inside others, we will be judged on our outsides". Fortunately or not I believe that's the truth, it's how you deal with people that makes the difference, always start with a smile and a warm heart.

Max Boyce

Wrong. In all industries men will chat up women. Some men are rude, crude dudes, stupid gits and they have no idea how have verbal intercourse with a woman. A million years of evolution will always push testosterone levels higher in men (and women) when mating opportunities presents themselves, real or imagined. I personally find online propositioning and sexual manoeuvring a bit perverse, but boys will be boys, and lesbians will be lesbians. And, even Shakespeare new that... and made quite a name for himself by drawing our attention to it, over and over. We are all in the "SHOW" industry and it is in the nature of the starving artists/writers/directors/producers to ask an actress to show him (or her) her stuff. An actress or artist who knows her stuff should be able to turn the tables on the virtual bounder and not make much ado about nothing... and then wrangle a big movie part using her female wiles and a bit of sly cunning. One must know how to play the part, to get the part. Best to you!

Alysia Jene' Culley

Thanks Ozzie! so true.

Alysia Jene' Culley

Max, I used to live in Missouri, which is the "Show Me" state. I know all about show and tell. I'm not an actress and I doubt I ever will be. I didn't want any part in their movie either. Not on any level. Why would I ever debase myself or use manipulation in my interactions with others, for anything? I may not have much, but I have integrity.

Max Boyce

I think you'd make a fine actress. From my experience, a bit of acting, horse riding, fencing, wing-flying, bull roping, sky diving, and understanding the moves and groves and blocking of the stage and its lighting and sounds, adds to the screenwriter's bag of words, merds and rolling swirls of a script or novel. Actually, being a screenwriter, you have the second BIGGEST part in the movie. And, your cute... lol! Best to you!

Alysia Jene' Culley

Thanks Max.:) You are quite a character. You intrigue me. I bet you have some interesting stories to tell.

Paul Sumares

Admirable as it is, I think this falls under the category where one should apply the wisdom: "Do not give advice, because wise men don't need it, and fools won't heed it". Well ... with exception of that piece of advice itself, I find it to be generally true and valid. And in this case, men who do the sort of thing you describe are not likely to change because you gave a heart-felt and reasonable explanation of why that behavior is not appreciated or appropriate. The kind of people who learn from such an explanation are not the type of people who act like this in the first place, don't you think? So best is probably just to expect to continually ignore this behavior or provide the appropriate short response, making it clear to the person that you do not appreciate the direction they are taking the conversation into. Until people start raising their children better, it will be the flipside curse of the blessing people often find in being considered attractive.

Natalie Villa

I've had this happen as well and I completely understand what you are saying. I appreciate you saying this and those who have had some excellent words of wisdom.

Max Boyce

Aloha Paul, Raising children better? When has this ever been true in human history? Even a small % of 7 billion people raised badly is millions of bounders and cads and scum. And besides that, where would we find bad guys to write or film if children miraculously became saints. And of course there's Conrad's, Kurtz, who was raised a perfect gentleman. Best to you- måx

It's simple. Click "Contact Us" at the bottom of this page and report them to Stage 32 Admin.

Okay. I sent you a request, but only because I liked the topic of your post. I promise! Let's be -professional- friends. :-)

James Holzrichter

Well I can truly say I have never been talked to because of my good looks....lol I usually get the chats that want me to send money, or my personal info. It sure does get annoying after a while. My favorite one, before I got married, was using an online dating service and only ever being contacted by, "girls" who only wanted me to go to their web site. Even if they are only interested in your looks, at least they are interested, a bit creepy, but interested. lol Having never had anyone interested in my looks, I see things from the other side of the scale. :)

Hi Alysia, I am 61 years old and it never happens to me. I would like someone to think I am good looking some times my husband tells me I am but I think he has his glasses off at the time. Don't worry about it, life is too short to worry about things like that. Be happy you look good. I was once apond a time. Now I am a childrens writer and just want everyone to tell about my new childrens series coming out in Jne this year. Mary Sumeridge Beginnings. You can see Poppy the troll on my web site it is really good Bill Smith did it for me. It might make you see beauty is in the eye of the beholder as I think he is lovely. http://maryfilmer.com/ Oh and if youdo get time please help an old lady by telling 5 friend about my childrens books published by Alpha Wolf in America. I am from Australia so it is a long way away from me. Mary Filmer author

Alysia Jene' Culley

Thanks Natalie, Lyse, Pierre, Pedro, James, Nate and Mary for your thoughts. I appreciate them. I have blocked said persons and i cut the conversations short as mentioned. I was unaware of being able to report misconduct, if need be i will certainly do that as well. I am a generally friendly, fairly easygoing person... it's just this particular issue really irked me, because it happens more often than I would like. I was always taught to speak up for myself, not only as a woman, but as a human being. I am sorry if I offended anyone. That was never my intention. Sincerely, Alysia

Mary Filmer

Hi Alysia, I am a writer so I have thick skin but I was a little up set my self today when someone called me a spam, becasue I talked about my book series. So do not worry we all get it sometimes and maybe those of us that are unkind will also get it too. Mary Filmer Author

Pedro Vasquez

Yes, Alysia, you can report those issues to the website administrators. And yes, you have the right to speak for yourself, which you should exercise. And no, you don't need to apologize. No one should have been offended about you bringing up what happened to you. Now, let's write! - or [replace verb for your usual occupation here]. Good luck.

Tabitha Baumander

I think talking up your work is fine for this site. What else are we to talk about but our work?

Audriana Strunckland

your looks?? I think that might just be ego cause,no offense but you are not even pretty-im just stating a fact not attacking you but look in the mirror girl!

Molly Kerr

Audriana, PLEASE tell me that you're Alysia's friend and this is one of those awkward, "we insult each other for a joke, totes don't worry about it" moments rather than those horrible, "did she just say what I think she said?" moments!

Audriana Strunckland

I thought this was a place where we need to be honest I was being honest-sorry I mis spoke-it was an honest opinion-and yes we are close friends shes number ONE ON MY LIST AND SHE KNOWS IT-

Audriana Strunckland

Audriana Strunckland

Pedro Vasquez

Good post Alysia. Right one the mark. Okay. Let's get this professional relationship off to a great start. Let's write something together one day. Good luck! P

Stephen Ossias

There is nothing more offputting than disrespect. There is no place for that in a professional environment. Best of luck to you in your endeavors.
