I don’t think an artist should limit themselves to a single medium. But I do believe that every artist has an ideal medium. Not a single place, but a form where they feel most comfortable.
For an actor, theater is the ideal medium. Even with all the effort of the crew behind a show, in the end it is only the actor and the audience separated by the fourth wall. It is a visceral exchange where a talented actor fully surrenders to the character. There are no camera angles, no second takes, no effects. The performance is direct and cannot be rebuilt in editing.
For a screenwriter, television is the ideal medium. Carrying a series or a long-running show with consistency while still surprising the audience is where great writers stand out. Without a strong script, none of the other professionals can truly shine. The foundation of everything is the writing.
For a director, film, whether a feature, a short, or a documentary, is the ideal medium. It is where the director guides ideas and themes through the narrative like a conductor or the captain of a ship, making sure the work moves in the direction that was envisioned. From understanding the script to guiding the other talents, many aspects of the production are influenced by this professional.
Of course this is not a rule. As I said, artists move across many areas, and that is part of the magic of our industry.
What do you think?
