When it comes to screenwriting tips, Shonda Rhimes is definitely the person to speak on writing for television. I completed her screenwriting course on MasterClass and over the years I have gone back to the course multiple times for inspiration as well as to refresh what I think I know about the art of writing a script.

I completed Aaron Sorkin's Masterclass this year again as I’m in a bit of a funk with one of my screenplays. There were a few notes that inspired me to not quit on the screenplay, and my hope it that by sharing these points that it will reinforce them in my mind, but also act as inspiration for anyone else who needs some wise words from a legend in screenwriting.

This is an important episode. So many people struggle with how much detail to add to a screenplay when writing a fight scene.

The biggest obstacle to a writer learning how to write is mindset. Having particular words being used in the writing community impacts on a writers ability to learn. They start focusing on the wrong thing. The idea of RULES is such a thing. People start obsessing about learning the rules and stop focusing on learning the craft. Rules are comforting. If you learn the rules you will succeed. It is far scarier to hear that you will take years to learn a craft with no guarantee to success.

So many of us screenwriters write things that can never be made. With a little bit of thought we could write something that will sell. Yes we should write what we know. Tell the story we want to tell. But we must also have some idea of the world we live in and be realistic. Business is what makes the world go round. So consider business before spend so much time on something that will never see the light of day.
