Hi there community, a lot of you will know me as I've been a member of Stage32 since September 2015. A couple of years ago I was asked to be a Lounge Moderator and I've had a wonderful time since then.
In 2015 when I joined this community, I was just working hard to get Seeing Rachel made, but didn't really have many connections in the film industry. I think this was due to me being an introvert who found it easy to hide away and write in my study whenever something challenging needed doing. I can still feel a little of that 'hide-reflex' when I have to make decisions, but from 2015 till now, I have to say I'm a different person.
The Geoff you see today is more confident when engaging with others about film and it's all due to Stage32 accepting me for who I am and not casting aspersions at my aspirations. Even my friends would participate in a little Geoff bashing, one telling me rather gleefully "I think you should know, but I'll never watch any of your films." Thanks for letting me know!
I know we speak a lot in this community about developing a network and that may seem a little bit of a sugar-coated response to how we forge ahead in this industry, but it turns out to be true. Don't doubt it.
After Seeing Rachel fall short of gaining the production finance it needed and me having to sack my Executive Producer back in 2017/18. I had to put the project on the back-burner and dissolve my company. They were difficult days indeed.
I got on with other projects and talked a lot to my fellow screenwriters here in the community. Yes, the 'hide-reflex' had established itself again! For the last couple of years I have participated in the November Write Club and last year I met Sandra Isabel Correia. We encouraged one another in our goals for the month and after a number of conversations about moving on from being a writer, to being someone who Produced films - I recalled RB telling us to control the business for as long as we could. It seemed like the right next thing to do. And so it came to pass that we wrote a blog article together about the Writer As Entrepreneur.

Christmas was drawing near and I wrote to Sandra saying that in the new year I wanted to put forward a proposal to her and so in the New Year I asked her to come on board for Seeing Rachel and she accepted! Wowzer. After a short conversation with the Producer Sandra became the Executive Producer.
That was in January and since then Sandra has been mentoring me in the business side of things. Again this goes back to what RB was saying about forging connections with people who could take you to the next level. NOTED and ACTED upon. Sandra has such a wide experience of business in the US and Europe and over the last nine months I've learned so much from her.
This journey finds us meeting together, for the first time in the flesh, at the Tribeca Film Festival in Lisbon, this October. We have developed a YouTube Channel to promote the film as well as raise the profile of human trafficking. I'll put the link in the comments. I have even started a new production company, now registered at Companies House.
The lessons to learn are, that whilst there are no guarantees, the production is in development. Sandra's energy has rejuvenated me and allowed me to consider myself as that entrepreneur. This happens because Stage32 has made it so easy for us to connect and encourage one another.
My advice - Develop a relationship and then ask for help. Be genuine and human rather than "Hi, can you help me make this film." Show interest in what they are doing, in who they are and in doing this you will learn so much more about them and yes, the potential for your career may just blossom.
With thanks to RB and the team for making this possible. We press on. Peace out...Geoff
