I sat down at the piano, and accidentally started writing a song...

And I immediately said, “Oops.”

Not because I hit the wrong note.

But because I stumbled onto a song—real inspiration—and my first thought was, “No, not today.”

Why?

Because producing it would take more time than I have right now.

And if I start writing it, I will finish it. That’s just how I’m wired.

But...

Wyman Brent Hahaha, nice! As for "I'm not a videographer," become one! Or find one on here. I'm sure there are plenty who would love to help.

Kat Spencer

Maurice Vaughan - I have found that if I put it away, I never return. Out of sight, out of mind, and a little Dory brain :) At least when it comes to musical ideas. I usually write them in 2 hours or...

I dream of being able to spend my time solely on writing and producing. But there are so many other things I have to manage on the side!

Kat Spencer

Julien Ober I hear that! How much time do you get to spend on writing and producing now?

Julien Ober

Kat Spencer Currently 10 hours/day. But since I don't earn enough money from these activities, I'm forced to take a job on the side from time to time, which greatly reduces my production time to 2/3 hours/day.

Sometimes the best use of a film score is not to use it

JAWS has one of the greatest film scores ever; instantly recognizable and key to the film's success. But one of the film's (and cinema's) best and most famous jump scares works because Williams didn't use any music for that particular moment.

Take a look:

It's brilliant what John Williams did, Tucker Teague! The scene works better without the music. I'm gonna try it in a script. Maybe have a sound happen every time the villain/monster shows up, but not...

So true, Tucker Teague! I love this, thank you for sharing!

Impressive!

Silence during distressing scenes is much more effective than the presence of music in emphasizing the danger of the situation because this silence brings us back to reality. When we ourselves are exp...

Night Owl or Early Bird Composer?

I’m definitely a night owl—my best stuff shows up when the world is finally quiet and I should be sleeping. But I know some of you are up at sunrise, writing full scores before I’ve found my coffee.

What about you—when does your creative zone hit?

Maurice Vaughan

I'm a night owl and early bird, Kat Spencer. I'm mainly an early bird though.

Julien Ober

as I get older, I'm more and more an early bird :)

Kat Spencer

Hahaha Maurice Vaughan - Ok. I did not know you could be both.

Kat Spencer

Julien Ober - I'm still waiting for that to kick in. I don't think I'll ever be an early bird.

Riffusion is now Producer.ai - and the results are impressive

As a musician and composer, I have made my own music for film / video work (and as the music writer for a synth band named RAILER).

I have been experimenting with different AI sound / music composition tools like Suno and others but so far have felt they are "Meh". Diffusion has been my favorite and...

What’s the Soundtrack for Your Life Right Now?

If someone scored this chapter of your life, what would it sound like? Have you ever scored your own?

Maurice Vaughan

I've been resting and relaxing more lately, Kat Spencer, so the soundtrack for my life right now is something relaxing. What's the soundtrack for your life right now?

Ashley Renée Smith
If you missed this news earlier this year like I did, it’s absolutely worth a read.

Back in February, the Indian Screenwriters Association and the Composers Association of India signed a groundbreaking fair credit deal to ensure that screenwriters and composers receive equal recognition alongside directors and producers on all future productions.

Composing for an animated film

When composing music for a film I have made a sheet arrangement music cues how and in what style I want it sung how do I make a recording as how I wanted exactly sung or that’s part of the composer if the feature gets chosen just a few questions. Also this our original songs crafted exactly for the film Thank you for any feedback

Kat Spencer

Hi Tania Ocasio -sounds like a cool project! Just to clarify—are you asking if you should make a demo showing how you want it sung, or if that’s up to the composer later? If you have a clear vision, e...

DAMN U — A Love Letter to the Most Underrated Song by One of the Greatest Artists of All Time

There will never be another artist like Prince.

Not because of the hits.

Not because of the mystique.

But because of the way he could whisper and make the whole world tremble.

"Damn U" is not just a song.

It’s an act of surrender.

A man, vulnerable, undone, confessing love like a prayer no one else can he...

Great share, Ashley Renée Smith. I don't have any experience scoring, but this video would come in handy if I made Sci-Fi scores for sizzle reels.

Ahoy Sound Designers!

I've got a massive sound SFX collection - lots of libraries - and would love some suggestions on software you use to organize and then access individual clips when you need them.

For instance, let's say you are editing footage and you think, hey, I need a breaking bottle against a wooden bar, so what...
