Hi all! I signed up in February but never got around to actually use Stage32. I'm currently pursuing my MA Screenwriting degree. Genre-wise I feel drawn to Sci-Fi and Fantasy as well as Animation. At the moment I'm rewriting my sci-fi feature film as part of my degree. Though I'm based in Germany, I'm hoping to connect with other screenwriters :)

Hello, I have a question: Is Netflix interested in TV Show Ideas without a Script of the pilot? I'm not a screenwriter, I'm a composer/sound designer based in LA. What she's saying about shooting the different set ups is so crucial to understand. Screenwriters have to understand what it takes to get what's on the page on the screen. "Coverage" as it's called can radically change the pace of the story and the production.

From my experience, there are a couple of things to consider when including a character's description. The first and foremost is - is their ethnicity essential to their character? If not, then consider leaving it as "open ethnicity", which gives the producer/director the freedom to craft the cultural background of that character during casting. If you chose to include more information about a character's ethnicity, then consider having a reader review it who can speak to it and keep it in check. The worst thing you can do is include it as a caricature or stereotype. Give them goals, an authentic voice, and strengths/flaws, and you will have served them well.

I have to say, this is really helping in character creation and development, an area where I have been having some difficulty in. Plus the added benefit of this helping keep costs to a minimum is incredible.

Re: locations: Alias was amazing. They had Sidney going around the world, but the entire series was filmed in the LA area! The locations scouts earned their money.

Vielen Dank Jeanette. This has been very interesting so far. Just curious if you know what specific budget concessions were made for THE BOYS? It’s been a while since I watched it, but it seems to break all the great advice you’ve been giving i.e. it has a HUGE cast, multiple locations, animals, children and of course is very VFX and stunt heavy.
Question for Jeanette: Will a producer typically pass on a script after the first read based on its budget? In other words, will they typically give you a chance to make changes before passing?

Ooooh, y'all - I have been on a lot of sets with SFX make-up, like wounds and blood, and I have to say, THIS IS A SPECTACULAR NOTE! Knowing whether or not you HAVE TO see the impact, or the result of the impact, or keep it off-screen really helps to gauge supplies and added efforts by those on set!

Yep - cheaper to shoot on a live location, but you have less control over the variables. More expensive to shoot in a studio, but you can control a lot of the variables that can disturb your ability to make your days. Great question, and thank you for the answers, Jeanette!
How did the German writers - the ones you dragged kicking and screaming to the US - respond to writing in a 'Hollywood' style? Question: When several locations are necessary, is it usually practical to shoot all scenes for multiple episodes during one time at the location if seasonal aspects are not important?
I'm from Cape Town, South Africa, where parts of 'Dark Tide' was shot. (And my apologies for your security issues.) But considering your inflated security bill, what still made it worth your while to film in countries like SA where you assume you can stretch a US dollar? (Although I'm assuming the animatronic shark never came here as that was filmed in Pinewood Studios in the UK.)

Hi Jeanette. I’m busy with a novel and I’m in my final stages of writing. My goal is to have it converted into a series. The story is similar to Acrimony with a bit of a South African local flavour. Government does give money for locally produced movies. There are some scenes that might need to be shot in Europe but I’d like to connect with you so we can see if this is something that might be of interest to you.

@Amy Maki I don't think the fantasy genre has to be avoided, it just needs to be a little more savvy. I'm thinking of Ladyhawke: very few special effects (even though "magic" is involved) and the climax of the story occurs without any visual effects, giving so much more weight to the scene.

The opening to my TV pilot has a flight of dragons. This is scene is integral to showing who the character. I am quite sure that a producer will see this scene and think of costs. Is there a way to allay their fears. Should I have an idea of how the scene could be shot? It is the only scene with dragons.

@MartinReese -Not to worry. You will not scare away a producer with a scene of fighting dragons, if the scene does what you say and is important to your concept. You could ( don’t have to) check in with a VFX company and see what they would charge to put the scene together. May be interesting to find out what it costs entail.

I work on Bibles that are much shorter 20 - 30 pages, but of course they very much depend on the concept and how deep you want to dive into the characters, the world and the seasons. To me Pitch_decks are shorter (max 10 - 15 pages). However, I personally prep pitch decks and Bibles with my potential buyer in mind. Again, that's my personal opinion and my way of handling this, and it's not an answer that fits everyone, or every project. @MorganMorris - glad to hear you know of "Dark Tide". Yes - the animatronics and a lot of the special and visual effects related shoots were done in the Pinewood Studios. The film was an official UK / SA Co-production, so we needed to shoot in both areas. No worries on the security stuff, it's the same in other areas/countries too, and we producers just deal with it. It didn't scare us off because we loved shooting in beautiful Cape Town, with its amazing and high-caliber professionals. Totally recommend it. Currency is a thing no matter where you shoot. I normally prevent currency exchange risks by locking in the currency with the banks. More to come....

That said, you need all the seasons scripts written in advance to do this, and it's a little like shooting a really long movie if you will, when it comes to the shooting schedule. My personal take on this (and I can only share that and can't speak for other producers / distributors), is that I like to spend time in prep, make sure the scripts are ready and as good as they can be, and I can schedule the shoot, like I would with my features. However, sometimes - subject to the concept and maybe actors availabilities - that's not possible, and one has to shoot episode by episode, which is not the end of the world either. Often it's a matter of the preference of the production, the distributor, the actors, the concept ... and what happen in real time.

I can't speak for everyone, but in my experience, most professional producers would discuss an option with you first, before sharing your idea with anyone. @ElyjahMercurio - Great and complex question, which truly depends on a lot of factors including and not limited to (in nor particular order) the concept of the series, the buyer / distributor, the writer, the showrunner, cast, the development process, the packaging process, the cast, the director, and sooooo much more. QUEENS GAMBIT took 30 years (if I recall correctly - I may be off here) to get made. I personally allow 1-3 years to get a project off the ground and during that time I create the bible, the pilot, package the showrunner, director and lead cast, create my finance plan (and secure all related elements), start talking to potential distribution partners in the US and abroad, etc. Once I secure a distribution partner, I start the writers' room process, develop season one, then prep the season, etc. all of which can take anywhere from 6-18 months, depending on the concept, showrunner, and the distributor. The shoot itself can be anywhere from 6 - 12 months depending on all the elements listed here, and the post-production (which I often start while still shooting, depending on the concept and my shooting schedule) depends on how VFX, the (amount of) editors, and can be anywhere from 6 - 12 months, depending on the amount of episodes and the various approval steps with the director, showrunner and buyer. In short - not an easy question to answer, because there are VERY many variables. More to come....

My personal advice would be to be tasteful with including brands, use them specifically (and only) to support characters traits and use them organically in support of the story. @Lisa Amitai - I would not say that's the case, especially not after watching "Loudermilk" on Prime ... with 12 characters in the AA Group, which is seen in very episode. However, I would only use as many characters as you absolutely need to support the show concept, and drive the drama, conflict and seasonal story and character arcs. To your other question, I would say that if you have a great concept and are located in another country, there is no reason not to send it to a US producer, if it's something you feel should be made in the US, or in co-production with a US producer, because you belive it has global appeal. Not a one-goes-for-all answer I can give you without knowing more specifics. @Matteo Mascanzoni... You are asking someone who is born and raised (and loves) Koeln.... LOL. Not sure I can give you the most objective answer on this, but I would say Berlin, Koeln and Munich are the best places to consider when working in the industry in Germany. And yes, we work with Stage32 members :). @Bruce Bishop - if I'm the producer you'd talk to then I would want to know everything (right away) about the place you would suggest, if it has incentives, low production cost options, strong team base, and is one I can get my actors to... Can't speak for other producers, though. @Katharina Mag.art.Kahler - yes - if supports the concept or character - like in "Killing Eve" - that can work., as long as the buyer agrees with that (potentially expensive) approach. @Giancarlo Spinelli -I totally agree with you in that series have gotten so much better, so much more diverse, and much more interesting. Films look a little pale at times, in comparison. I'm watching many of the Academy Award nominations because I'm voting, and I must say, that I have not been impressed in recent years. But since you asked - yes, multiple cameras is something the producer and director decide when thinking about optimizing the shoot and reducing the schedule. @Lauren Cristadoro - this producer -being me - is likely not going to immediately pass on a great script that appears to be expensive, because I will take the time to adjust it to meet my budget needs if the concept is truly unique and impressive. @Darren Nash - from the looks of it, I don't believe THE BOYS is a show where budget concessions played a big role. If I'm correct, THE BOYS is a studio project, based on Superhero IP's the studio owns, controls, and would likely want to capitalize on through various revenue areas. @Lauren Crossley - it does help to have an agent or manager. However, I read scripts that come directly from writers (but I'm selective). I can't speak for other producers / buyers. @Angel Williams - not really (at least not to me initially) , but it very much depends on your show, concept, story, character traits, etc. @Trisha Burke - To sum it up simply, Above The Line is mainly Talent, Producers, Rights related costs, Below the Line is mainly Crew, Equipment, Location, Permits, etc. related costs. @Amy Mäki - I would consider "Game Of Thrones" fantasy - it worked well I'd say. I don't think fantasy is a genre to avoid. I do think it can help if its based on an existing IP, but a strong concept can also be of interest to a buyer. @Victoria A.C.Quin-Harkin - if all your characters are essential for the story and concept, and they do not have similar / overlapping traits, then you don't eliminate any.
